Background of the Study:
Effective time management is a critical life skill that underpins academic success, professional productivity, and personal well-being. In Kaura Local Government Area, Kaduna State, informal education initiatives are increasingly recognized for their role in teaching students how to manage time effectively. Unlike formal education, where rigid schedules and fixed curricula prevail, informal education offers a more adaptable and experiential framework for learning time management strategies. Through community workshops, peer-led sessions, and interactive activities, students are exposed to practical techniques that help them prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and overcome procrastination (Olubayo, 2023). These community-based programs often employ real-life scenarios that challenge students to plan and allocate their time efficiently while balancing academic, social, and personal responsibilities. The experiential nature of these interventions encourages learners to reflect on their daily routines and identify areas where improvements can be made (Akinyemi, 2024). Moreover, informal education in Kaura leverages the power of social interaction and peer support, providing a platform for students to share personal strategies and learn from one another’s experiences. This collaborative approach not only reinforces effective time management practices but also fosters a culture of accountability and self-discipline among learners (Musa, 2025). Despite the growing adoption of these informal strategies, there remains a significant gap in empirical research assessing their effectiveness in improving time management skills. The present study aims to bridge this gap by critically examining the influence of informal education on students’ ability to manage time effectively. By exploring the specific techniques employed in community settings and analyzing their impact on student performance, the research seeks to generate insights that can inform the design of more effective educational interventions. The findings are expected to contribute to a broader understanding of how informal educational practices can complement formal curricula, ultimately enhancing students’ overall academic and personal productivity (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem :
Despite the recognized benefits of effective time management, students in Kaura face persistent challenges in organizing their academic and personal lives. Informal education initiatives aimed at teaching time management have been introduced in the community; however, their impact remains inconsistent. One major problem is the lack of a standardized approach within these informal settings, which leads to varied levels of skill acquisition among students. Many participants report that while they gain some practical tips for managing time, the absence of ongoing support and structured feedback results in short-lived improvements (Sani, 2023). Furthermore, cultural and socio-economic factors often contribute to a lack of discipline and prioritization, as students may struggle to balance traditional obligations with academic demands. The informal programs, although well-intentioned, do not always address these underlying issues comprehensively. Additionally, the absence of formal evaluation mechanisms makes it difficult to measure the effectiveness of these interventions, thereby hindering efforts to refine and improve them (Chinwe, 2024). This gap between the theoretical benefits of informal time management education and the actual outcomes observed among students necessitates a thorough investigation. The current study seeks to identify the barriers that prevent effective time management and to assess how informal educational practices can be optimized to overcome these challenges. By systematically examining these issues, the research aims to propose targeted strategies that will help students in Kaura achieve better balance, improved productivity, and enhanced academic performance, ultimately contributing to their overall success and well-being (Abdul, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the influence of informal education on students’ time management skills.
  • To identify the key factors that facilitate or hinder effective time management in informal settings.
  • To recommend strategies for improving time management training through community-based programs.

Research Questions:

  • How does informal education affect students’ ability to manage time effectively?
  • What specific informal strategies contribute to improved time management?
  • What challenges impede the successful adoption of time management skills in informal settings?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Informal education significantly improves students’ time management abilities.
  • H2: Peer-supported time management activities enhance overall productivity among students.
  • H3: Socio-cultural factors moderate the relationship between informal education and effective time management.

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it explores how informal education initiatives can improve time management skills, a critical determinant of academic and personal success. The findings will provide educators and community leaders with practical insights to design more effective interventions that complement formal education. By highlighting the most effective strategies and identifying potential barriers, the research offers valuable recommendations for enhancing productivity and discipline among students. Ultimately, this study contributes to the development of a more balanced and efficient learning environment in Kaura.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the influence of informal education on time management skills among students in Kaura Local Government Area, Kaduna State. It focuses exclusively on community-based initiatives and excludes formal academic settings. Limitations include variations in individual learning experiences and contextual influences.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Time Management: The ability to organize and plan how to divide time between specific activities effectively.
  • Informal Education: Learning that takes place outside formal institutions, often through community engagement and experiential activities.
  • Productivity: The effectiveness with which tasks are completed and goals are achieved.
